Learn more about our natural sea sponges.

Sea sponges contain minerals that beautify the skin. Among the most common are calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, zinc, and potassium. They are suitable for all skin types and can gently exfoliate the epidermis for a more youthful and fresh appearance.

Sea sponges are one of those organisms with natural antibacterial properties. They contain enzymes that naturally inhibit the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. They also possess a series of intricate channels that allows them to self clean and makes them the most hygienic of sponges either for skin care or general household cleaning.

Natural sea sponges are non-toxic, hypoallergenic and suitable for even the most sensitive types of skin. Also, they do not retain odors or develop bad smells.

There are several benefits of using a natural sea sponge for body and face care:

  • Their antibacterial properties (discussed above) make them a much more hygienic bathroom tool than other types of synthetic or even natural sponges.
  • Their miniscule spikes – which are part of their structure – gently remove dead cells, dirt, make-up or other cosmetics from the skin. You’ll have a first class skin exfoliator and cleanser for daily use in your bathroom without spending any extra time than that of a simple shower.
  • By the same properties, sea sponges will help you stimulate blood circulation, reduce cellulite, blackheads and blemishes, thus helping you maintain your skin healthy and young for many years. Can you really say no to that?
  • Natural sea sponges are incredibly absorbent and very soft when wet. They create rich lather and offer a rich & luxurious sensation during and after bath. Exactly what you need after a tiresome day.
  • They are hypoallergenic and toxin-free. They do not cause allergies or irritations and are suitable for even the most delicate types of skin. Especially if you’re one of those types with sensitive skin, you’ll want to try them.

Warning: If you try a sea sponge for your bath time and skin care, you may not be able to ever go back to other kinds of sponges.

Yes, you can use it with very gentle circular movements, and it is important that if you are going to use it with your baby, you always use it wet and never dry. The Wool sea sponge, as its name connotes, is the softest and most appropriate for sensitive skins.

Are sea sponges good for babies?

Ocean sponges that live on the seabed are hand-picked by expert divers. When they are cut, they are not uprooted and a part is left on the bottom of the sea. In this way, sponges re-grow and return to their natural size after a few years.

In addition, some parts are removed and carried away by currents to new areas where new sponge populations may begin.

Each sponge is unique and different from another. Each sponge, within the same category, will never be the same as another. However, there are characteristics in common depending on the area of origin.

For example, sea sponges of Mediterranean origin are more resistant than those of the Caribbean. The temperatures of the waters where they will be collected mark important differences in the final product’s density, quality, and duration.

You could say that sponges are not plants or animals in the strict sense. They are aquatic animals without a brain or central nervous system. So, they don’t suffer.

You can use them the same as other sponges! Actually, before the invention of plastic sponges, natural sponges were the only sponges. When it comes to personal hygiene, follow these simple directions:

Rub your favourite soap or add a generous quantity of your favorite cleanser on your sea sponge; Add some water to create lather and massage your body (or face) with smooth circular moves. At the end of your shower, rinse your sponge well, gently remove the excess water.

To maintain hygiene and prolong its life, it is important to dry your sponge. You can let it dry on clean surface or, if you buy one of our sponges, you’ll find our hanging cord very useful for this purpose.

Natural sea sponges are used for various purposes such as:

  • Cosmetics application and removal
  • General cleaning purposes
  • Ceramic art
  • Pet cleaning & care
  • Wall painting & home decorating
  • Sponge Painting & drawing

The shape of the sponge is the one it has when it is complete and uncut. This means that the sponge will have a flat bottom in the area where it was cut from the seabed, the rest being rounded. They are said to be cut when a large sponge is divided into several pieces; usually, the cuts have two flat sides and a rounded top surface.

Cut sponges can be used without problems for everyday use. If, on the contrary, you want to display your sponge as part of the decoration, it is best to choose a complete one.

Natural sea sponges are more robust and last longer than synthetic ones because they are more resistant to abrasion by nature.

The most durable of all sponges is the Mediterranean Honeycomb sea sponge, which is consider the highest quality sea sponge. With the proper maintenance (read below), a Honeycomb may exceed two years of usage.

On the other hand, the Wool sponge, Grass sponge or Caribbean silk sponges have lesser durability than honeycomb but still high to last you longer than other types of sponges.

It is recommended to regularly sanitize your natural sponges, usually every 2 to 3 weeks if used daily, for you should proceed as follows:

– Rinse the natural sponge well under cold running water. Immerse it in a small container filled with two tablespoons of vinegar for each litre of water. Let it soak for 2 hours.

– Remove the sponge from the container and squeeze it to remove excess liquid. Let it dry on a clean surface like the edge of the bathtub.

At this point, your sponge should be new and ready to be used.
